A 5,000-entry multilingual digital Purgi Dictionary connecting Purgi with English, Hindi and Urdu — created through sustained community engagement and field documentation in Kargil, Ladakh.
A substantial digital lexical record of Purgi vocabulary.
Purgi, English, Hindi and Urdu in one resource.
Available through free Android and iOS applications.
The dictionary is deliberately multilingual: Purgi, English, Hindi and Urdu are brought together within one digital resource. An English search facility lets users begin with a widely used language and reach Purgi, Hindi and Urdu meanings.
The project grew from approximately four years of sustained engagement with Purgi. Dr. Abraham learned Purgi as a non-native speaker, travelled nearly 500 km and visited more than 60 villages to collect vocabulary and understand local usage.
Explore the journeyThe first edition uses Latin-script representation as an accessibility bridge. The proposed next phase will add Purgi script alongside Latin transliteration, strengthen community verification and expand the resource.
See Phase IIThe dictionary is now officially listed on Bharatavani, the national language repository project implemented by the Central Institute of Indian Languages (CIIL), Ministry of Education, Government of India.
