Purgi (Purkhi) is a local language of the Kargil region of Ladakh, with a living oral and cultural tradition.
The source materials describe Purgi as a major local language of the Kargil region. Its vocabulary has historically been transmitted substantially through oral community use, making documentation important for preserving words, expressions, linguistic memory and cultural knowledge.
Purgi entered Ladakh's official-language framework in June 2025. The Purgi script was publicly launched in Kargil on 6 June 2026. These developments create an opportunity to connect digital lexical documentation with an emerging written form.
The first dictionary edition uses the Latin alphabet for Purgi words as an accessibility measure. The intention is not to replace Purgi writing. It provides an immediately usable bridge while the written future of the language develops.
A durable lexical record can support learners, teachers, writers, translators and researchers while helping preserve vocabulary and expressions for future generations.
